Astronaut Composite

Overview: The above image was a short project I made in Photoshop. I've been learning Illustrator recently and wanted to do something quick in Photoshop to make sure I don't forget anything I've learned. The final product is a composite of four images, the archway, the planet, the astronaut, and the space scene in the background. It was simple to make and the only real skills involved were color matching and masking.

Process: To create the image I first had to make the space background. I simply layered it over the archway and create a mask so that it fit into the correct space. The floor was originally orange in the photo I used so I then created a blank layer, filled it with a sample purple color from the space photo, then played with the opacity until it looked like a proper reflection. Next I took the planet, originally orange, and fiddled with the color mixer until it was a purple color. This way the scene was sort of monochromatic. The black area around the stock planet photo was then removed using Select>Color range and deleted once it was selected. Finally, I masked the remaining photo so that it fit in the arch, but the same thing could have been accomplished with a simple clipping mask. The astronaut was fairly simple, I just removed the scene around the original image until it was just the astronaut, added a color filter using the previously mentioned purple color, and then used a burn curve to help darken the lower body so that it blended with the shadows better.

For the future: If I were to repeat this project again my main focus would be on the interior of the archway. I would have lightened it so you could see more detail rather than having the only detail being the stone floor. I also would have added some sort of depth to the archway itself because as of now it looks like a two dimensional area rather than one you could actually walk through. I also would add more subjects into the space area such as potentially more planets, asteroids, or rockets so that there was more complexity to the image. Overall the image suited my purpose; it was an entertaining piece to make that helped me recall some of my Photoshopping techniques.
